There once was a time in the business world, where if a company wanted to convey a message to a large group of people they would hold a business conference or a seminar. The only problem with that was people were required to travel to a specific location in order to attend. Thanks to a far more powerful tool available to businesses today, this “old school” way of conducting conferences and seminars has been replaced and greatly improved.

A web-based seminar, better know as a webinar, is a way for businesses to project a message to a large audience, without asking guests to spend time and money traveling to a physical location. Webinars can be used in a variety of different ways. From hosting online conferences, seminars and lectures to sales and marketing presentations, businesses in every industry can benefit from this dynamic way of communication. Webinars can be used to:

Build-up business contacts – When a business is new to an industry, holding a webinar is a great way to introduce the business and start building a brand name. The audience can put a face with a business name as well as interact with the speaker. This builds credibility and creates a connection between attendees and presenters. Showcase business as a recognized industry authority – In an oversaturated market, standing out from the competition is extremely important. Webinars allow a business to build-up their image as experts in their field and show they are the “go-to” guys for industry related issues. Promote a product – Webinars are the perfect platform to sell and promote products such as books and videos. During the webinar, the speaker can reference clips from a video or pages from a book they are trying to promote. At the end of the seminar the audience can be directed to a purchase page or be given more information on how they can obtain the product. Maintain close communication with clients – Since webinars make business more personal, businesses can use this to interact with their existing client base. Online meetings can be used to host client question and answer sessions, product release updates and client training sessions. Keep expenses low – Webinars provide businesses with a way to save thousands of dollars on conference or seminar related expenses. Rather than renting out a convention hall or large room for the audience to gather in, a speaker can conduct the webinar from their office and attendees can watch and interact from wherever they please. It also eliminates the need for costly travel. Add value to a business – Offering a webinar can add value to your business. When a business frequently hosts online webinars, they are building customer loyalty, adding value to the products and services they sell as well as staying fresh in the minds of prospects and clients. Create a profit center – Businesses can make money by hosting webinars. If a business is speaking about a hot industry related topic they can charge people to attend or even offer recorded downloads to be purchased. Capture sales leads – Hosting an online webinar is a great opportunity for marketing or sales teams to gather leads. During sign-up, businesses can make it a requirement for attendees to register. The information gathered from the registration can then be turned over to the sales team as warm leads to follow-up on.

Webinars provide businesses with an engaging way to reach out to a group of people separated by location. No matter how a business chooses to use this technology, it is a powerful tool for business growth, client retention and community outreach.

Most diabetics will be familiar with the terms blood glucose, blood glucose test, blood glucose level and blood sugar meters, but what does blood glucose really mean? Why do blood sugar levels need to be controlled?

If you’ve done a blood glucose test through glucose testing meters and the lab technician has highlighted some of the results or marked them with an asterisk, you probably want to know what constitutes a normal, below normal or abnormal blood glucose test results. So today let us discuss blood glucose tests reference ranges.

The result of any blood glucose test in a clinical lab is compared to a “reference range”. This simply means that the result of the blood glucose test must be considered in the context, without which the test is meaningless. To interpret what is normal for you, the doctor must know what is considered normal for people of your age and what activity was done before the test was conducted.

For example, when you receive the results of your blood glucose test, your doctor might say something like, “Your blood glucose test was out of normal range.”

So, what is a reference range and what can be considered “normal”? Some laboratory tests give a simple yes or no result. Suppose you had a test done for strep throat, the result of the test would show if you have the infection or not. But most other tests are not so simple in that the meaning of the result will depend on the context. The lab report for your blood glucose test for example, will typically show your result followed by the reference range. This reference range is established by testing a large group of healthy people and study what appears to be ‘normal’ for them.

The normal fasting blood glucose level is about 70-99mg/dL or 3.9 to 5.5mmol/L. So if your blood glucose test result reads 100-125mg, ref. range 70-99mg/dL, it means that your blood glucose level is above the normal range. When the doctor in the example above said your blood glucose test was above the normal range, he is referring to the normal blood sugar level in context with the normal reference range for fasting blood sugar. Blood sugar levels above the normal range usually indicate a medical problem. If your blood glucose tests consistently show high levels of blood sugar, it may signify a pre-diabetic stage.

There are however many factors affecting your blood glucose test results. It could be factors like anxiety or stress, excessive intake of alcohol, caffeine, etc. Therefore, it is essential to take the blood samples in a standardized fashion. Hence, it is important to comply with the doctor’s instructions to prepare for your blood glucose test, like coming in first thing in the morning to draw the blood through high quality blood glucose meters before eating anything. This ensures that your blood sample is close to the parameters of the reference group, which is crucial for the accuracy of the test results.

Although your blood glucose test report may show the result in comparison with the reference range, your doctor will need to interpret those results in relation to your health status and physical evaluation based on his personal knowledge of your medical history. He would need to determine if the result falling outside the reference range does indeed mean something significant for your individual health status or not.

It is probably better to read a translation and understand a book than struggle with the original text and loose the essentials. You cannot do without translation. This article is about situations in which translation is very common – like in Spain.

When you depend only on translations you run a big risk. More when a large group of people is involved and not an individual reader. What is the effect of a widespread translation on culture?

“Como inculcar valores a sus hijas (How to inculcate values upon your children.),” is the Spanish translation of: “Children learn what they live.” This is a translation of a book title.

Changing the title is also what you see over and over in the Spanish cinemas. There are only a few films that get subtitled and the translator thinks partially for the a broad public. Title are rarely left intact.

Primeval (the movie) is translated as: “Crocodile. A serial killer.”

The first question is: “why does a translator change the meaning?”

Could it be that a translator wants to add additional value beyond that of the translation itself.

But doing so, the viewer will be deprived of an important function of language processing, the elaboration of meaning. Perhaps the best translation of the previous mentioned book is indeed “how to inculcate values upon your children,” but shouldn’t you find that out for your self? When starting the book (in the original language), you are only directed with the message: “children learn what they live.” It is still very neutral.

A culture where movies are dubbed, (foreign) television without subtitles (thus dubbed) and translated books, without a significant market for original text, will impact on the country’s culture.

Such a culture will foment acceptance and dependence. It will incentive people to accept the formal authority and not think for themselves.

In case of the movie it is possible that “primeval” does not call too much attention to the Spanish viewers. Do they need more explicit information about the film – to read that it is about a lethal crocodile?

“Going to the source,” means that you want autonomy over the information gathering process, you do not get told by others what something means. You can think for yourself.
In case of a translation, accepting the extra step in the process of gaining meaning, you are less autonomous.

Of course there are benefits of translation: You cannot know and learn everything for yourself. In this way you stay focused on what you are good at. Difficult books are better read in translation, but something as simple as a title of a film is better in original language, it offers some more language exposure.

The other end of the dimension also gives trouble. In the Netherlands there is hardly a Dutch equivalent for a foreign imported word. Unlike in Belgium (and of course Spain) where people are more proud of their native language and where they always try to find a matching term in their own language. But that is another topic.

Over-exposure to translations indeed shapes a country’s culture.

In different cultures at different times, there have been radically different views of female “beauty”. Some cultures have seen women as most desirable when they are voluptuous. The reason is not hard to find. When a family is rich, it can afford to buy all the best food. This shows most clearly in the children, particularly the girls and women who are less active than the boys. So when food is generally in short supply and what you can afford is not very nutritious, you almost certainly grow up thin. When you are looking to marry money, you therefore look for a well-padded son or daughter of marriageable age. At other times when even the rich cannot find good food, everyone makes a virtue of being thin, even accentuating the figure by using corsets to pinch in the waist to the disappearing point. In modern times, the one question of body size has been hijacked by big business. Magazines are full of pictures showing young women of painful thinness. This makes the ordinary person dissatisfied. The food industry therefore sells weight loss meals. The pharmaceutical industry sells pills and diet supplements. The publishing industry sells walls of books on weight loss, healthy eating, nutrition, cooking for weight loss, and so on. The world grows rich on the backs of those in search of weight loss.

So, cutting through all the hype and marketing double-speak, is there any one diet or strategy to make weight loss easier? Surely one of the books that sell in their millions, must have some value? Well, if weight loss was easy, no-one would be overweight. No matter who you are, where you live or what your lifestyle, shedding unwanted pounds is a challenge. The most interesting piece of research came out in February, 2009. It allocated a large group of people to four diets with different levels of fat, proteins and carbohydrates. Each of the four diets was nutritionally sound and offered healthy outcomes to the cardiovascular system. People were followed over two years and encouraged to keep the diet going for as long as possible. There were no significance differences in the results. Everyone lost an average of 7% of their body weight regardless of the diet followed. So here is a message from someone without a book to sell. People who follow a calorie-reduced diet lose weight regardless whether that diet is high- or low-carb, high- or low-fat, high- or low-protein.

The biology could not be easier to describe. We store fat in our bodies against the need for energy when there is no food to eat. At that time, we burn the fat to give us the energy we need. An effective diet tricks the body into burning the fat. It’s the equivalent of a famine. The lower the calorie intake, the faster you burn the fat, but the more hunger you will feel. This is where a drug like meridia becomes so important. This is one of the leading appetite suppressants, sending a message to your brain that your stomach is full. If you stop feeling hungry, it’s easier to keep to the diet. Over time, your stomach will naturally contract and you genuinely will be full when you eat smaller portions. Meridia helps you lose weight safely.
