Eleven people were rushed to a hospital Monday morning after a car collided with a Broward County Transit bus in Wilton Manors, a small town lodged between Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park. The accident, which occurred at about 7:30 a.m., happened near Powerline Road and Oakland Park Boulevard when a car slammed into the back of a Broward County bus stopped to allow passenger onto the bus. The bus was carrying 27 passengers at the time of the accident. Eleven of the passengers were taken to area hospitals by ambulance. Three of those passengers were admitted to the hospital for what is being termed “serious” injuries. The remaining 16 passengers were all treated at the scene for injuries.

It appears the person with the most severe injuries from the car-bus accident was the driver of the car, a 39 year old woman.

The woman was trapped in the car after the impact, and was only freed from the wreckage after fire departments from four different cities arrived on scene. It appeared the woman suffered injuries to her legs and pelvis.

Although a Florida Traffic Crash Report has not been released from the accident yet, police investigators on scene says it does not appear the woman’s car braked before slamming into the rear end of the bus. One of the investigators said there were no skid marks in the area of the crash. Because of the number of people involved in the accident, and the multiple police and fire departments that responded to the accident, the crash report may not be completed for more than five to seven days. Fire Rescue departments from Fort LauderdaleOakland ParkPompano Beach and Broward Sheriffs Office responded to the car bus accident.

The obvious first question is, “why has this not been done already?” Part of the answer to that is probably associated with the fact that people are not banned from smoking in their houses with children in. But that is not a good reason or a good excuse as most parents will not smoke in the same room as a child but on the other hand they will smoke in a car with child passengers. Some people feel that this could be a form of child abuse as the smoker is damaging the child’s health.

It has been proven that second hand smoke has been linked to chest infections, ear problems and asthma. It is also confirmed that smoking a cigarette in a car, even if a window is open, produces a larger concentration than a whole evening’s pub or bar smoking would produce.

This amount of second hand smoke is not only bad for travelling children but will also effect the health of any adults travelling to.

If those adults already suffer from heart of lung problems it will only make the situation a lot worst.

With regards to introducing government legislation there have already been successful introductions of legal changes in Cyprus, South Australia and New Brunswick, California. Surely a world that is sickened by everything bad that happens to children should now understand and want to protect the smallest people who have no way of protecting themselves.

Another reason to ban smoking in a car is for traffic safety reasons. If a driver is lighting up, or smoking a cigarette at sometime he will not be concentrating on his driving and the road around him. Our Department of Health have stated that they will look at the situation and that they strongly recommend that people do not smoke in cars, especially if they transport children.

My boyfriend is a nervous passenger. However, he is not the only one. There are millions of people all over the United States who can’t seem to ride comfortably in a vehicle without worrying about what other drivers are doing or that they will get into an accident. But if you are the passenger in someone else’s vehicle and their driving is making you nervous, how do you react? Do you say something or just leave it alone and shut your eyes? How do you know when and if you are crossing the line into hurting that person’s feelings?
There is a fine line, it seems, between being a nervous passenger versus being a back seat driver. The two are almost interchangeable at times. For example, I will sometimes have my boyfriend with me and we will go out to run errands. With him sitting in the front passenger seat of my car, I will be sitting at an intersection or a road waiting until it is safe to make a turn.

However, when I try to bend my head forward to the right to check for oncoming traffic, I will find that his body is blocking mine as he is also bending forward to check for traffic. “You’re good on this side.” he will tell me. However, you should never take someone’s word for it- even if it is someone you trust and love because as well intentioned as they might be, it can still cause you to get into an accident if you’re not careful.
While I, myself, am not a nervous passenger ordinarily, I have certainly had my share of moments riding with people whose driving skills are absolutely atrocious. Unfortunately, I have discovered that most of these people emanate from my own family! Why, I have an upcoming trip that I will be making with my aunt by car in order to attend a family function. Since my aunt lives near me, it only made sense that we would carpool. However, I insisted that we take my car and that I drive. It is sad to say that my aunt’s driving makes me so incredibly nervous that I sometimes have felt like I was having a panic attack while riding with her. From following people so closely that I am almost sure we are touching the back bumper of their car to speeding and surging in traffic, the nightmare continues to live on in my memories, making me shudder.
If you are a nervous passenger or if you simply don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings because you feel as if you would not be able to control your commentary while riding with them, then one option is to offer to drive  your car as a sort of means to an end. I’m sure that the other person won’t mind it unless of course, you are a bad driver as well!
